Undergraduate Composers Concert

The Undergraduate Composers Concert will be held Friday, April 29, at 12 pm in Room 115, Music Building. Outstanding works by composition track students at all levels will be considered for this concert and selected by the composition faculty.

Entry Requirements

In order to be accepted to the composition track, students should submit not later than at the end of the student’s second year:

  • a completed minuet and trio (or equivalent exercise) from 6C and

  • a free composition for any instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both

Junior Year Portfolio

During the student’s junior year, at least one more composition for any instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both should be added to the above to constitute a Junior Year Portfolio.

The composition faculty must supervise the submitted works during the creation process in such courses as MUS 101, MUS 103, MUS 107, and MUS 199. The review panel will decide whether or not the student’s work is sufficiently advanced to continue in the composition track.

Senior Year Portfolio

The final portfolio should be completed during the student’s senior year and should contain three pieces for varying instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both. At least one piece should be for small ensemble.

The composition faculty must supervise the submitted works during the creation process in such courses as MUS 103, MUS 107, and MUS 199. The review panel will decide whether or not the portfolio satisfies the senior project requirement and will select the best pieces for the Undergraduate Composers Concert.

Honor Track

For those composers in their senior year who would like to pursue senior honors in composition, they must complete original compositions of varied instrumentation and advanced scope, totaling 10–13 minutes, and have participated in regular private lessons with a member of the composition faculty for at least one quarter. Students wishing to pursue the honors track need to indicate this in their submission.
