The 2006–07 academic year was a successful season of
collaborative events showcasing a range of musical styles, from
classical works of western Europe to the distinctly American sounds of
gospel. The UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, University Chorus and Chamber Singers
joined together at Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts to present
Mozart's Requiem. The concert, featuring a very recent completion of
the Requiem penned by Harvard musicologist Robert D. Levin, was
conducted by Jeffrey Thomas, who spent the remainder of the year on
sabbatical researching his upcoming book Handel's Messiah. The University Chorus and Chamber Singers closed their season with a
change of pace from traditional choral music, teaming with the renowned
Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers
to celebrate the lively forms of traditional and contemporary gospel at
the Mondavi. Al McNeil, beloved music professor emeritus at UC Davis,
served as guest conductor, leading the singers through a program of
choral music highlighting compositions by African American composers
and arrangers, with an introductory piece by Aaron Copland. |
