Bizet's Carmen
UCDSO Teams with Adler Fellows for CarmenThe UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, with D. Kern Holoman as music director, collaborated with the San Francisco Adler Fellows in May to bring Bizet’s Carmen to the Mondavi Center stage. The joint effort—the product of several years’ discussion among the companies involved—raised the Department of Music to a new level of performance. Rehearsals were held, sometimes simultaneously, at Mondavi Center and at War Memorial Opera House. The company assembled in Davis for a five-day residency in early May, culminating in the public concert. The majority of the roles were sung by Adler Fellows, including Jeremy Galyon, baritone, as Escamillo the toreador and Kendall Gladen in the title role. Gladen previously shined as soprano soloist for the department’s Beethoven concert in March. UC Davis’ own Paul Corujo, now off to graduate studies at the Johns Hopkins University, blended well with the Adler participants to sing the role of Lieutenant Zuñiga. An extensive and rewarding undertaking, the Carmen Project represents an interim stage of a possible ongoing collaboration among the UC Davis Department of Music, Mondavi Center, and San Francisco Opera. |
