Berkeley Symphony Names Sue-Hye Kim an Emerging Composer in Residence

Sue-Hye Kim, doctoral candidate in composition at UC Davis, has been named as one of three inaugural Emerging Composers in Residence for the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra’s expanded Under Construction series of new music readings. Initiated in 1993, Under Construction gives composers a reading of a short work-in-progress or completed work that has not yet been premiered, records the performance, and presents a copy to the composer at no cost. Each composer selected for the series is a resident of the greater Bay Area and has not previously had a work performed by a local professional orchestra, other than a reading. The Berkeley Symphony will read and perform works by Kim—including Creatio, Heung, and Bom—on Saturday, March 16, at the Berkeley Arts Museum, and on Sunday, March 30, at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley. Kim was selected from a pool of 28 applicants. Alternates include UC Davis graduates Eric Chow and Andy Tan.
