Contains recordings covering the history of Western art
music from Gregorian chant to the works of contemporary composers. The
recordings are from major labels such as EMI, as well as independents like
Sanctuary Classics and Hyperion. Performances feature major artists including
Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Glenn Gould, Maria Callas and hundreds of
others.

Smithsonian Global Sound
Includes music, spoken word, and natural and human-made
sounds. Recordings come from the non-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings
label and the archives of other labels. It includes music from around the world
as well as spoken word recordings of biography, memoir, drama, and poetry.
Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Dubois, Mahalia Jackson, Sterling Brown and others can
be heard reading from their own works. Other non-musical material includes
sounds of biological origin, sounds of the rainforest, documentary sounds (such
as aircraft, cars and tools) and more.

African American Song
Documents the history of African American music with
recordings by major names in the history of black American music. Artists
include Ma Rainey, Lead Belly, Mahalia Jackson, Alberta Hunter, Tampa Red, and
William "Bunk" Johnson. Some recordings have never before been
available. Access to the field recordings of folklorist Alan Lomax is also
included.
