Ching-Yi Wang was born in Taiwan in 1980. She began her professional music training in performance at the age of five and started taking composition lessons at the age of twelve. She received her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in theory and composition from Taipei National University of the Arts, where she studied composition with Professor Hung Chung-Kun and Professor Yang Tsung-Hsien. As a second year Ph.D student in composition at the University of California, Davis, she has studied with Kurt Rohde and is currently studying composition with Ross Bauer.

Wang skipped the last year of undergraduate study and graduated from Taipei National University ranked number one. One of her music compositions, Yu Lin Ling, was awarded the Tune in Taiwan 2002. In 2004 she received a scholarship from Taipei National University, which was only awarded to the top ten graduate students of the University. From 2005 to 2006 she was hired as a lecturer of theory and composition in the Applied Music department at Tainan National University of the Arts.
