Jolán Friedhoff earned her music degree from the University of Indiana. She played the violin in the Austin Symphony while earning her master’s degree at the University of Texas and studied abroad for a year in Vienna, Austria. While still a student she was hired as principal violinist with the Vienna Tonkunstler Orchestra. This was the highest orchestral position a woman could hold in Austria at that time. Her first full-time position was with Germany’s Philharmonia Hungarica. Before relocating to Davis, she worked with Germany’s Saar State Opera Orchestra, where she was the first woman in a lead position and was the only American in the orchestra. |
