Davis, Calif. (Oct. 15, 2009)—The Empyrean Ensemble opens its 2009–10 season with an extraordinary program of premieres plus the final movement (“Non troppo lento”) from Aaron Copland’s Piano Quartet. The performance takes place 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre of the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to the Copland piece, the program comprises world premieres of works by Stephen Blumberg, Ed Jacobs, and UC Davis faculty composer (and Empyrean founder) Ross Bauer, as well as the West Cost premiere of “Serenade for Four Strings” by Seung-Ah Oh. Matilda Hofman guest conducts.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for students and children. Purchase tickets online at MondaviArts.org, through the Mondavi Center ticket office at 530-754-2787 or 866-754-2787 (toll-free), or at the door. Accommodations for persons with disabilities are available upon request.

The ensemble-in-residence at UC Davis, Empyrean presents engaging, thought-provoking, eclectic programs, enabling audiences to experience original works by emerging and established composers alike as delivered by the finest new music performers in California. Empyrean’s core players are Hrabba Atladottir, violin; Tod Brody, flute; Peter Joseff, clarinet; Ellen Ruth Rose, viola; and Karen Rosenak, piano. Guest artists for this performance are Eric Achen, horn; Leighton Fong, cello; Gloria Justen, violin; and Carla Wilson, bassoon. The Empyrean Ensemble is directed by UC Davis faculty composers Mika Pelo and Kurt Rohde.
