UC Davis Department of Music Announces 2008–09 Celebratory Season
The UC Davis Department of Music’s upcoming season celebrates multiple (and musical) milestones. Noteworthy UC Davis Centennial events include the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Gala concert, featuring violinist Jorja Fleezanis (concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra) and the University Chorus, and the Music and Theatre & Dance Departments’ joint production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma. In addition, the University Chorus, Alumni Chorus, and UCDSO continue their annual collaboration with a bicentennial birthday performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
Empyrean, the department’s professional ensemble-in-residence, continues to present fresh and exciting contemporary music throughout the year, including works by internationally recognized composers Petros Ovsepyan and Mario Davidovsky, as well as California composers Wayne Peterson and Sean Varah. Also stretching the boundaries of contemporary music, artists-in-residence Laura Carmichael and Naomi Sato—aka Duo X—perform cross-cultural sonic creations mixing extreme technology, ethno-music, experimentation and improvisation.
Additional highlights include artist-in-residence events with Lois Brandwynne, piano, and Heifetz protégé Zina Schiff, violin; the Ives Quartet, an ensemble inspired by the unique American composer Charles Ives; and Rita Sahai, performing Hindustani vocal music. The season also includes performances by the department’s own student-community ensembles: the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, University Chorus, Early Music Ensembles, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Gospel Choir, Hindustani Vocal Ensemble (directed by Rita Sahai), Gamelan Ensemble and Samba School.
Most performances take place at Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. With student ticket prices starting at $4, and most tickets at $20 or less, the Department of Music provides uniquely affordable access to quality performances across a variety of musical genres. Individual and subscription tickets are available beginning May 16 through the Mondavi Center Ticket Office: 530-754-2787 or MondaviArts.org.
The department continues to host free Noon Concerts, typically held in the Music Building or the Mondavi Center Lobby. Looking ahead to 2011, the department anticipates completion of the new UC Davis Music Performance & Recital Hall, a mid-size, acoustically rich venue tailor-made for intimate chamber, vocal and solo performances, such as those often showcased at the weekly Noon Concerts.
