UC Davis Symphony Orchestra Presents Free Community Concert
The UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of D. Kern Holoman, presents a free performance of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Berlioz’s “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath” from Symphonie fantastique, and UC Davis alumnus Ramteen Sazegari’s Overture on Thursday, June 5, at 7 pm in Jackson Hall of Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.
UC Davis graduate student Jessica Bejarano conducts the Tchaikovsky in the second of two public performances connected with her master’s thesis in conducting, which centers on Russian secular art music. Romeo and Juliet always seems to invoke fervent response from composers who turn to it, and Tchaikovsky’s Overture-Fantasy is probably his first masterpiece. The majestic tone poem chronicles the street brawling, flare of love at first sight, and tragic apotheosis of Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy. Many music lovers consider it to contain, quite simply, the best love music there is.
Also on the program is a new work by Ramteen Sazegari, a 2007 graduate of the UC Davis Music Department. Conductor D. Kern Holoman will round out the evening with an encore performance of the final movement of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, the fiendishly boisterous “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath.”
This concert is a free event. No ticket or RSVP is necessary. Accommodations in Jackson Hall for persons with disabilities are available upon request.
