University and Alumni Choruses Perform Brahms Requiem

Jeffrey Thomas directs the University Chorus and Alumni Chorus, along with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, in the Brahms German Requiem on Sunday, March 9, at 8 pm in Jackson Hall of Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The concert features internationally known soloists Tamara Matthews, soprano, and David Arnold, baritone, who previously appeared in the Department of Music’s presentation of the Verdi Requiem.

Unlike conventional requiem works, Brahms much-loved German Requiem (1865–68) employs passages from Luther’s translation of the Bible, with a focus less on death and more on consolation for the living. The text avoids the notion of redemption through Christ, conveying a more universal than denominational religious sentiment—Brahms himself referred to the work as a “human requiem.”

Also on the program, graduate student Jessica Bejarano conducts the UC Davis Chamber Singers in Arvo Pärt’s Cantate Domino, Missa Syllabica, and the Beatitudes.

Tickets are $10/13/16 for adults and $5/6.50/8 for students and children. Purchase tickets online at MondaviArts.org, through the Mondavi Center ticket office at 530-754-ARTS (2787) or 866-754-ARTS (toll-free), or at the door. Accommodations for persons with disabilities are available upon request.
